Take the funded MFA. Decline the unfunded one. That is close to the whole of our advice, and it is more useful than any ranking order, because two identical programs where one pays you a stipend and the other charges sixty thousand dollars produce completely different lives for the same writer.

Stipend levels vary widely and are frequently below local living costs even at funded programs.

Apply to a dozen programs, prioritise funding, and be willing to move somewhere you had not considered. Writers who optimise for a famous name over a funded place frequently spend the following decade servicing debt on an income that cannot support it.
