Nobody has ever bought a book because the author had an MFA. What a writing program buys you is enforced production, serious readers, and a network that lasts decades. That is worth real money at a funded program and very rarely worth six figures at an unfunded one. Ask about funding before you ask about anything else.

What are the limits of this ranking?
Publication outcomes are individual and no program controls them, though many imply otherwise.
Faculty change, and a program chosen for one writer can lose that writer before you arrive.
Funding packages vary by cohort and are not guaranteed by published policy.
There is no reliable measure of workshop quality visible from outside the program.
What this means for you
Write the manuscript first. Programs admit on the writing sample, so the work you do before applying determines where you can go and how much they will pay you to attend.
Then apply widely, prioritise funding over prestige, and be prepared to decline. An unfunded writing degree taken on debt is one of the least defensible financial decisions in creative education, and we would say so to anyone considering it.

Do you need a degree to be a writer?
No. Publishing reads pages, not transcripts, and a large share of published writers hold no writing degree. A program is worth paying for if you do not produce reliably without deadlines, or if you want to teach at college level, where an MFA is the terminal credential.
What is the difference between an MFA and an MA in creative writing?
An MFA is the terminal studio degree, workshop centred, and the credential recognised for college teaching. An MA is academic, shorter, and more literature focused. If teaching is any part of your plan, the MFA is the one that qualifies you.
How important is funding in a writing program?
It is the single most important variable. Fully funded programs cover tuition and provide a stipend, usually through teaching. Unfunded programs charge full price for the same workshop structure. Given what writing pays, taking substantial debt for an unfunded MFA is a decision we would advise against in almost every case.
